HOB skimmer with a filter

I am setting up a new 50 gallon aquarium and the guy at my LFS said that I should run a filter before I run my protein skimmer but I was wondering if this is true and if this is true what filter would I need?

I'm not sure why you would need to run a filter at all, much less before running a slimmer. With proper flow (no debris allowed to settle), a skimmer should grab most of the solids and the rock and sand will provide biological filtration once it is "live".
