I just picked up a horned puffer fish yesterday. When the guy atty the lfs fed them so I could see him eat, none of the other fish would let him get anything...so I knew it was iffy but wanted to give him a chance to have a good life. My question is what is the normal behavior puffers exhibit when newly added to a tank? When should I expect him to eat, if he will at all? What kind of live snails or shrimp would be best to offer him if he won't take frozen?

I wouldn't worry to much if it takes 2 days for the puffer to eat . I would get a clam from the supermarket open it up and put it in the tank . Puffers love clams .

Thanks I will try that. Think I should grab some snails while i'm at the fish store too?

It won't hurt. I keep a steady supply or hermits and snails in the tank for my puffer to eat as he pleases.

Cool spiny box puffer. How big is he?

he probably wont starve to death any time soon.

He's only about two inches long. I'm happy to say he ate everything I threw at him today. From flake food to snails. SO relieved! I had to crack the snail open for him...kinda messy so hopefully he'll be able to do it once hr
