Is a protien skimmer helpful during cycling? Should I use it?

Most don't recommend it during a cycle, but if your cycling with fresh LR, I do prefer to run a skimmer, if there is no LR and your cycling with a raw shrimp, or other method, then no I wouldn't turn it on until the cycle was complete

Ive read many books that say not to run a skimmer until after the first week.
