i just had a question on my lighting. i bought a standard light timer. what should my light cycle be? 12 hours or is that to much

I have mine on a 12 hr cycle but others do it from 8-12 hours. Just remember that the longer the daily light cycle the sooner you`ll have to change bulbs. For example I have to change my VHO lights every six months on a 12 hr schedule while someone on an 8 hr schedule could possibly go 8-9 months if you see what I mean. Good Luck.

I agree most anything from 8-12 hours should be fine. Mine don't come on till 10 AM and go off at 9 PM so I can enjoy the tank after work.

I run mine for 8 hours 2-10, so I can feed and enjoy it after work.

I have my T5 actinics come on first, at about 7:40 a.m. Then I have my T5 whites come on at about 8:00 then my halides dont kick on till around 9 a.m. The T5 actinics stay on until 8:40 p.m. and the whites stay on until about 7:00 p.m. and the halides kick off around 8 p.m.
