The norm is to mimic the natural day and turn the blues on first, then the whites for your daylight period (keeping the blues on as well), then turn off the whites, leaving the blues on for a little while longer to simulate a morning and evening transition.
I would say 8-10 hours total, so if you are going with 8 hours, blues on for 8, and the whites on for 6.
