i am a little confused  , i was reading some posts and i thought live sand just had bacteria in it to create a biofilter, is it suposed to have "actuall living organisms"?

In addition to the bacteria, true "live sand" will also include a large population of microflaura and microfauna. These bacteria acts to nitrify the ammonia in the water and generated from fish waste and rotting food. the microfauna acts as detrivores and help to "clean up" the waste in the tank. If you use a DSB, further down in the Anaerobic sections of the sand bed will be denitrifying bacteria that will work to convert the nitrates into gas which then leaves the tank. HTH 8)
