We used live rock and aragonite in one tank and live rock and regular ol aquarium sand in another. From what I've heard, when you buy something called "live sand" it's not really that live bc it's probably been sitting there awhile and everything in it is dead. And we've had lots of luck with the live rock

Whatever sand you use will become live sand after awhile, I'm new to this but from most of what I've read it seems like everyone questions how live live sand really is after sitting on a shelf in a bag for who knows how long. Wish I would have researched it more before I paid 40 bucks a bag for mine!

I only recommend live sand if you like how it looks like Fiji pink sand that is only sold "live. " unless the sand you're buying is coming from the ocean or an established tank, it is more than likely not live.
