Mag-Drive Pumps

Why does it say as a side note that "Mag-Drive Pumps are not recommended for saltwater aquarium external use." ?

I've never read this on a magdrive pump and I've used several in SW, never had a problem. I think I have seen it on the Pond Master Pumps, though.

well it says that in my marine depot catalog so i was just curious about it. does that mean that mag-drives are submersible and external pumps. which way is better to use it

how do you plump the pump externally?

it only seems to have threads on the output, but not the input

does anyone have some close-ups of how a mag is plumbed externally (inline)

well in the magazine pic i can see it looks as if the intake is female with threads matching the male output

Yep, can be used either way.

which way is better to use it

Hypothethetically external will provide less heat to the water, but I think Mag-Drives are water cooled no matter which way you use them. I would look at space requirements of the sump and which was easiest to plump and make the decision from there.

well i will have plenty of room the way my sump is gonna be now so it would be easier to put it inside. plus i can always drill the acrylic later on for an external position.
