Get a skimmer, you will thank yourself for it later. In the 10 days I have had a skimmer on my 15g, all of my
cyano algae went away entirely and my coraline algae growth has been crazy. There are no fish in my so the bio load is extremely low, I do 15% water changes every week, check this skimmate:
That skimmer was $109, probably not much more than the Marineland skimmer. I was really on the fence about getting the skimmer, but I can assure you there is some nasty crap in that collection cup
