New to saltwater

Ok so my friend from work is big into salt water I have done lots of fresh water but this will be my first salt tank he's giving me a 10gal and some live rock all I'm doing is getting live sand, a heater and giving him a filter pad so I can steal some bacteria first off how long should I wait before I get the pad back? And any tips would be nice btw I want to do a small reef tank with a clown fish or two and a bottom feeder

Well first do a cycle for 2 weeks. im new to and im still on my cycle with no fish on. so do the cycle then start adding fishes. run up ur filter and let it cycle without fish for 2 weeks. and do you have lights?

I got to get lights but my filter will be pre cycled because I'm borrowing bacteria from my friends tank

well let the bacterias get all the way in the tank. i think you should let it run for a week then
