Pool filter sand?

I'm nearing the end of my first 46 gal fowlr build and I'm also nearing the end of money in my wallet. So I'm looking for sand options, live sand I've heard is just a wAste of money, play sand is silica and causes algea problems and pool filter sand is quartz which is baisically silica sand. I'm wondering if there are any other sand options? I'm confused?? The guy I bought my live rock from told me to get pool filter sand, because it is what he always uses. Any advise is greatly appreciated!!!!!!

I used pool filter sand in both of my builds and have been very happy with it. It is way cheaper than any other option out there. I did have some early diatoms, but you will have that with just about everything you use.

Yea, I figured that about the diatoms. So is that quartz sand that you use? Thanks
