Protein skimmer advice

I have a 55 gal tank. I have a Red Sea "Triple Pass" protein skimmer rated to 250 gals that I apparently had on my 30 gal tank back in the day. Unfortunately the powerhead has gone missing and a replacement rio 2500 would run me $65. I don't have any recollection of whether or not this skimmer worked in the first place ... and it's huge (9" across and 22" tall). Buying a new skimmer would mean postponing my sump plans. Should I just get the pump and see how it works out, or is this 10 plus year old skimmer obsolete and due for replacement anyway? Any recommendations for a decent skimmer around ... cough cough ... $150? Thanks.

I run an eshopps on my 55 reef. It took some time to break in, but it is much more appropriately sized for the tank than a 250 monster. It'll skim much better.
