Just purchased a purple tang to clean up my hair algae a week ago.I thought it was because he was new and scared but he is so hyperactive.Hes doing a great job at clean up but he never stops moving! He swims in big circular motions around the glass as though hes trying to chase himself in the reflection and only stops to eat.Is this just this fishes personality or are purple tangs known to be so hyperactive?.His tank mates are a 3 inch Humma Humma and a 3 inch longnose hawk. They seem to just look at him like hes nuts!He is quite large 5 inches and Im probably pushing the limits of bioload for a 54 gal but so far all tests are perfect.Again is this a normal behavior for purple tangs???

Tangs are very active fish and need to be fed well to keep up with such a high metabolism. Your tank will eventually be too small for the huma and the tang. Tangs require LOTS of room because of their active swimming. Many tangs if not all out in the ocean are open water swimmers. They frequent reefs to graze, rest, and reproduce among the reef. Any other time they're in very large schools in more open space above and around the reefs.
