I'm new too this and I have the opportunity to collect some sand and seaweed from the gulf. Just wondering if anyone has used either in your tank.

Unless you are keeping livestock from there I would highly discourage that. You will get all sorts of unwanted bacteria, organisms, etc from there that will be unhealthy for your tank. When you buy live sand it had been treated so as to not introduce harmful stuff, unless you ate going to somehow treat it (and no idea how you could even treat seaweed without killing it) best to just buy the stuff from a store.
