Second tank as a refugium

I was wanting to know if I could have another tank below my new 50 gallon aquarium and use it has a refugium but as well as a refugium could I put a heater and protein skimmer and have the water return to my main tank through a pump if I can could I have some invertebrates and/or fish in my second tank.

You could, but a refugium is supposed to be a safe place for algae and things like pods to grow without being eaten. Putting livestock there removes that purpose and can make them less effective, but they can serve as a 'time out' for an unwanted crab or a fish that won't stop bullying.
