Looking for some specific clarification on mechanical filtration....for a reef system, is live rock and a protein skimmer sufficient for the aquarium? Or do I also need some sort of additional filtration?

thats arguable. some say you would need filter socks or something like filter pads. until i learn better i would say it depends. what are your putting in your tank? how big is it? are you just doing reef or adding fish?

A sump is always a good idea. Additional airation along with a place for your skimmer and other equipment rather than hanging on the back of your tank.
