Substrate ideas?

What is the best substrate to use in marine aquaria, coral sand, live sand or just plain tropical sand substrate? Does it make a big difference?

The best is an aragonite based sand such as Caribsea. You can buy live sand but it's not really worth the extra money. Play sand is OK too, but it's usually silica based (quartz) and some of it may be sharp and it may initially release some silica into the water. You should avoid crushed coral.

IMO live sand isn't worth much. Honestly what can live in a bag that long? A good solid aragonite based sand is best.

As far as substrate, it is really about the look that you like and want, as well as the livestock you are keeping. From Bare bottom to Deep sandbed, every one had both advantages and disadvantages.
