what creatures to put

i have a 15 gallon high aquarium. i have read that people put sertant animals in ther tank befor they put fish. for example hermit crabs, snails, shrimp, and things that from what it sounds like are needed to keep up the tank.

are these animals needed? what do they do? and which ones do i most need?

They all serve a purpose and are needed IMO. They are the clean up crew for the left over food and detritus, as well as the unwanted algae buildup...
