I think Im going to get some pool sand for the 29gallon. I want to do a real white sand and my current sand isnt to attractive. Plus my LFS said I would have to clean the sand real well as the bottom lacks o2 and can kill alot of the good bacteria I need when it is introduced to o2. Therefore Ill just save the headaches and get new sand. So my main question is, what sand size should I use?

Those O2 poor areas are actually good for "denitrification," a process where anerobic bacteria turn nitrate into nitrogen gas. It's not all a bad thing. You just need some invertabrates that like to dig around in the sand to keep it healthy.

The best sand is actually mixed grain. About like sugar, with a little more variation in grain size.
