I have some idea of what they are, but i'm not entirely sure. i've been browsing here, and it seems they're only available for saltwater tanks. Are they just rocks that people collect out of the ocean with live plants and such? And are they avalible for freshwater?

Live rock is just rock that has bacteria living in it. Driftwood could be considered "Live Wood" I guess if thats what you want to call it.

Live rock is basically a bunch of old dead corals that have laid in the ocean for a while, and eventually turned into what you use in aquariums.

But ANY rock that has bio bacteria in it can be considered "live".

Live Rock- Rocks removed from the ocean that usually have a variety of sea life attached to them, including sponges, algae, coralline algae, worms, and starfishes. Live rock is commonly used in reef aquariums because it contains bacteria that can help filter the water through nitrification.
