Or are they just a waste of time and money, I have been told to take mine out as I have a spray bar connected to my internal filter that breaks the surface of the water enough to oxygenate the water, what do you guys think?

What you have will oxygenate the water plenty. You can use an air pump if you want to run an ornament, or a sponge filter or something. But you don't require something like an air stone or bubble wall in the water if you have a spray bar.
It's your choice though - it doesn't make anything WORSE to run an air stone or something. But I suppose if you have the option to turn off the pump, your system will get quieter :)
