Hi, I am thinking about buying a male betta for a friend. I will also have to buy a tank and accessories. I've heard of them just being kept in bowls or even jars with no filter or heater.

I would really like to know if that is true and they can be kept so basically?

oy. opening a can of worms.

Here is what i have to say...

No. don't keep them in jars or bowls, and for gods sake, not in one of those evil planted betta vases.

Yes, you should get a heater and filtration.

You *can* keep them so minimally, but they will be miserable. Poor little guys are as abused as goldfish.

I agree with everyone else. It has been said best. They can survive in a bowl but not thrive in a bowl. Just enough to survive.

I had a betta in a 1 gallon and now one in a heated, filtered 10gl and what a difference. You can tell this one is happy in his 10gl. He swims all over the place and darts across the tank and just seems so happy to have room to swim and enjoy his fishy life.
