I have a pump to add some bubbles. Want to be careful about the water backing up the hose into the pump. The a Hugh mess. Does the pump have to be any specific height?

Above the water line works. You can also buy a oneway valve made to prevent this issues.

Get the valve then you can put the pump at any height.
