My own two cents ... I've had a lot of bettas over the years and ever enjoyed them as much as I have since I moved this one up to the 3 gallon. I'm sure they may survive in a 1, but they don't really thrive. I think that thing we feel watching fish ... The gut can tell the difference between living and thriving.

That 1 gallon tank the fish stores sell on the end cap with the bettas, that looks really big, really only holds .75 gallons of water. Three quarts isn't even enough to make a respectable puddle.

One of our LFS keeps them in 10 gallon communities and wow are those bettas active! They're always tearing around the tank fins spread out wide (not flaring, just swimming at top speed). Totally different experience.

I think the question is what experience you want to have with your fish ... Do you want more water changes and vigilance, and a fairly sedate fish? Or do you want less maintenance and a more active fish?

Oh yeah, a ten gallon and up is the way to go for a betta. But, a lot of people put them in small little cubes.

Mine is in a 3, which has 2.25 gallons of actual water ... He's very active, playful, and keeps building massive bubble nests. So my personal opinion will continue to be, the Marineland 3 gallon kit is great for bettas, if you test and water change and all that.

But this sign at PetSmart today made me really sad ...

As did the fish specialist on duty, on a busy Sunday afternoon, who had never heard of fishless cycling.

I have no aqua scaping ability. I just throw the plants in the tank. I try to make it look neat, but it always looks like a mess. At least the plants are green.
