Been awhile since I have played with an aquarium and have a nano set up. Back then, I either used a box filter or UG filtration. Never had a HOB filter before. Soon to come may be a 20 gallon and a 30. One of which, I am contemplating using Black Beauty (iron sand) as my substrate and "plants in cups" for my flora to go with various community fish. Both will use HOB filtering. I am using unfiltered well water in my nano now with good results. This water, though, is rich in iron. My questions include the following:
1) Since I am used to gravel with a UG filter, what do I have to do different with sand and no UG filtration?
2) With iron in my water and iron in my substrate, will this have any bearing on fish or live plants I may not be seeing in my nano?
