Hi, I actually posted here for help with my new 29 gallon tank a few days ago. I received a few replies, but was hoping for more. Well here goes: Saturday 3/15 I set up my new tank, added water from the tap, decorations and some gravel from my already established 55 gallon tank. I added some Seachem Prime and let it run for 24 hours. On Sunday 3/16 I added my 4 Tetras (2 red eyed and 2 black skirt). They are the sole survivors of the 55 gallon after having nipped everyone else to death. (I now know that this is because I had to few). On 3/16 my water parameters were: Ammonia 4.0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0 and PH 7.6.
On 3/18 - Ammonia 1.0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0 and PH 6.0. On 3/19 am- Ammonia 1.0, Nitrite .25, Nitrate 0 and PH 7.6. On 3\19 - pm after 50% water change Ammonia 1.0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, PH 6.0. Also my tap water tests at 1.0. AM I on the right track?
Btw I am keeping a close eye on my fish, they are doing fine. No signs of stress. I appreciate any and all replies! Thanks!

Are you saying your tap water has 1ppm ammonia? You said it tests at 1.0, but 1.0 what

Can you test your pH again? I'm concerned/confused why it went from 7.6 to 6.0

Thank you for replying threaten. Yes, I meant that my ammonia was reading 1.0 ppm. Here is a pic of what my water parameters are this morning without performing a water change last night.

I was going through this same problem. I have 2ppm ammonia in my tap. Your gonna have to remove the fish and let it run its course. Mine took 2 months. If you can get a hold of cycled media that will help you a bunch as well.

Jwh0818, I am using cycled media. Gravel and decorations from my existing 55 gallon, that I have had for 8 years. The fish are also from that tank. I thought that would be enough, but I suppose I could take out some of the filter media and use that as well. I have attached a pic. Please excuse the decor, I'm not yet finished.

Definitely use the filter media from your established filter. There's not a whole lot of beneficial bacteria in gravel

Your tank is beautiful. Love that little hiding place!

I was getting some bad readings from my evolve2 tank so I bought Dr. Tim's One & Only Nitrifying Bacteria from his website (you can check for a store near you). It worked within 48 hours all my readings in both planted tanks were perfect. (I, also, traded out my biological media for biohome plus or mini ultra)

Hello Y...

Tetras aren't the hardiest of tank cycling fish, but since you have them...
Cycling a tank with fish isn't the fish death sentence that many believe. If you carefully monitor the tank water by testing it every day for traces of ammonia and nitrite and change 25 to 30 percent every time you have a positive test for these toxins, the fish will be fine.

You need to prepare the tank by adding as many stems of Hornwort, Pennywort and/or Anacharis as you can get. These floating plants are cheap and available at most pet stores that sell fish. They will help your fish by removing the forms of nitrogen that dissolve in the water from the fish waste.

You simply test every day and remove and replace the water when needed. When you have several daily tests with no trace of either ammonia or nitrite, the tank is cycled.

Thanks B, I really appreciate all the help! I can't wait until after work so I can tend to my tank.
