I haven't started my fishless cycle yet

The cartridges (has two) that I got with the start-up kit only came with some carbon in it,
Should I add foam pads (sponge) in both of them? (Or one with ceramic instead?) and if so, which brand would fit in it (even if I have to cut it...)

I know it's a sucky filter but that's what I have

Thanks

Well the top fin filters don't have a tun room for customizing filter material. But it can be done and I have been very happy with mine. The cartridges have the actual sponge that is permanent in front of the cartridge I get these little mesh bags and I put ceramic rings in them. Then I stuff them in the back of the filter. It does take a little work to shove them in but it does work.

I'm not sure how much space you have but yeah I would try to put some sponges in the front of the filter cartridges and then the bags of ceramic rings behind if you want to do the rings cheaply you can just put them in the feet of some pantyhose and tie them off.
