Alright, so I got a tank a while back (fall semester) and avoiding a long recap got a pleco and managed to keep it alive for about a month. When Lee died I kind of wondered what a fish skeleton of that size would look like so ya. I left it in there. To rot.

Now the skeleton is clean and I want to start the tank over again. I need help- I want to do it right this time.

I have a filter but was afraid to start up it (something about dead fish remains getting in it). Do I completely change the water or what? Scrub the tank clean? Or are there now bacteria in it that I should keep?

Thanks.

Best way is to start fresh.

Have a read of these articles.
You should be looking at the fishless cycle.

How long has the filter been switched off for?
Chances are the good bacteria in the filter has died.

Give the set up a good hosing out - rise thouroghly with water, and if its a bit smelly, use a bit of vinegar and rise well (no chemicals or soap).

Good luck with your next project.

I agree, start from scratch. Throw out all the old gravel, decor etc since it is probably nasty by now.
