High nitrate

I think my nitrate is at 5.0 and that was after a 50% water change.

I'm doing another one but is there anything I can do? or I just do water changes?

Or 5 ppm nitrIte? If it's 5 ppm nitrAte, you're fine. If it's 5 ppm nitrIte or 50 nitrate, do a few more water changes.

If 5 ppm is the highest, it's nitrite, and do as many water changes as it takes to get it down to .25 or below.

Understandable. Just do water changes. Do a 50 to 75% change, wait a quarter to half an hour, test the water, and do another change. Once you hit 5 ppm, you could be anywhere from 5 and up, so if you check again and it still says 5 ppm, just keep doing water changes, waiting, and testing until you read .25 or below.

Well since you're panicking, then I'm assuming you have fish in the tank. Do a 100% water change.
