how do you know that your NEW fish will do good in your tank. or you just dont know and gotta basically wait it out until one croaks
 
Well, first thing would be to make sure your tank is properly cycled before you add any fish. Second would be to make sure that the tank setup you have is appropriate for the fish you would like to get. Third, you need to choose healthy livestock from a reputable dealer. Fourth, keep up with tank maintenance, don't overfeed, and don't overstock.

There are lots of other little details but those are the biggies, as I see it. I'm sure other folks will chime in with their opinions. Sometimes, though, you follow all the rules and still can lose a fish, it does happen.

Agree, quarantine tank....

.....must buy one of those before new 4 ft showpeice is ready for housing new expensive discus...... Hmmmmm.
