How often does a HOB filter need cleaning?

Hi, I just got a new filter and its a really nice one, so how often should I take it apart and clean it (Impeller/motor)? Thanks!!!

What is the model of filter? I have Aqua clears. I clean the impellor and impellor cavity every other time I clean the media. A great tool for this is a 3/16 or 1/4 inch artist's paintbrush for getting all the way down into the cavity. OS.

Hi thanks for the quick reply It is a API Superclean (5-20). I think I will have to take your advice about using a paint brush, that's a good idea! Do you think a old tooth brush would work?

An old toothbrush is better than nothing but I found it was too wide to get all the way to the bottom of the impellor hole where the most gunk is. OS.

Old Scales is spot on, as usual..lol. A toothbrush is a great tool to have around too, works great for cleaning the pipework....
