Ideas for freshwater sump. Frivolous?

Hi all, I have with me a 40 long and a 10. I also have a little 5.5 sitting around and I wanted to put it to use. I was looking into turning it into a sump that filters to both tanks. Anyone have experience? Thoughts?

The more water you add to the system, the more stable it would be. It would also be a great place to hide equipment, and maybe even use it as a fuge to grow something like hornwort, which will suck up a lot of nitrates. Just keep in mind that if it goes to both tanks, disease can then spread to both tanks.
