After 20 minutes of convincing my boyfriend that our catfish and cichlids would have a much better quality of life in a larger tank (I batted my blue eyes until they dried out!) we finally came to a decision. We're looking into a 120g set up.

My plans include 2 fluval 405's, PFS, wood, rocks, easy low tech plants.

So here's my question:

Would a layer of laterite under the sand for the plants have any adverse effect on the cycling process?

You know me, always researching before I jump in and I haven't found anything, pro or con, about doing this.

Any ideas?

only problem i see is when you mix substrates, the potential for mixing is there... most all cichlids and catfish like to move sand around, as im sure you know, and that would definately mix up the substrate...

Yeah, I'm taking that into consideration. The only digger we have in the bunch (for now anyways) is our syn. cat. I don't mind if it gets mixed up, I just don't want it messing with the cycle.
