Soooo I planted with hopes to hide some equipment using a more natural look. All beginner plants some...I'm preparing for melt but I know it should come back.

Yea the melt stage sucks but it is short lived imo.

Reading a bunch of reviews when I first started live planting I basically expected the worst and hoped for the best!

My ludwigia got pretty ugly looking within a week or 2. Once the stem ‘melted’ I clipped it off a little ways above the melted part and replanted them and they just exploded from there.

The only ones I’m unsure of so far are the scarlet temples I bought a month or so ago. They really haven’t seemed to be doing anything (though no melting yet). But after what I went through with the ludwigia I’m not scared if the scarlet starts to get ugly, I’m sure it’ll come back just as nice if not better than before!

Just curious and I know this is kind of a it's different for everyone situation but is there a timeframe where I should probably be seeing nitrates. I generally let it get to .5ppm Ammonia or a little more and do a water change roughly 24/26%. These are my parameters now excluding ph. I am also gravel vaccuming lightly because I want the plants to have some stuff to feed on as well. Is it just too soon.

Still a bit early yet to see nitrite/nitrate. Typically it’s a 6-8 week process, and the lower you keep the ammonia levels the longer it takes (as with gravel vac’ing, will increase cycle time)

Depending on tank temp and ph levels (higher temp and higher ph makes the ammonia more toxic), 1ppm ammonia is typically safe. Even 2ppm ammonia is relatively safe if you have a ph of 7.5 or lower and the tank temp is under 80°

With my first tank I did a fish-in and kept it roughly 1ppm ammonia (up to 2ppm some days) and tank temp ~74°. It took 4 weeks to start seeing nitrites/nitrates. I don’t know if I’d recommend letting it get to 2ppm regularly, but it will help speed up the process and these were just comets that I’m growing out for the pond. So no big deal if there was a loss, but I can’t say I lost any due to water quality (some of the sickly looking ones died later on, no losses around the higher ammonia days)

Thank you for the words of experience I keep my tank at 75.5-76 according to my inkbird thermometer. I have surely slowed it down with my gravel vaccuming then. I'm still doing my best with the lightly feeding thing.

I think I saw a chart once here with the ph to temp and ammonia levels correlation. I mean the tank looks great just can't wait for it to stabilize. I do enjoy it either way honestly but it's good to know i can let it go a bit longer as long as I test daily. The dark gravel choice may be biting me but you live and learn because I'm surely not taking it out any time soon lol. The benefits will go to the next tank lol.

Yea I don’t have the charts handy to post up but you can find them pretty easy on google too. Handy to have if you just want to double check and be sure you’re not getting too out of hand!

Still going plants are coming in nice. Have some one Anubias nana petitefor the top of the rock (plastic) and flame moss to cover the top of the decor rock.

May have a pregnant molly since one of the males looked and that's pretty much all it takes (jk saw some hanky panky going on). Just an update

Tank is going strong and I was gifted a 10 Gallon awhile ago I also started.....I almost like it more lol. The kid choose blue gravel I wish I would have made an executive decision to go with something more natural and still not sure what to do for the top negative space.

Well I have 6 guppy fry in the small tank..relocated male to big tank and placed molly with the other two guppies that seem to be getting larger also so I believe I'll have more fry within the next month. Molly seems to be around the same size but pretty sure she's storing or going to give birth.

The fry seem to be surviving just fine and not being chased. Hoping I get a male or two in that bunch. I don't know what to expect with the Molly. Someone has a 20 long locally that I might get it has almost everything needed and might be a good place to sperate the fry into eventually. I feel like by happenstance I'll become a red cobra tail guppy give away guy lol. The Molly is a dalmatian and lived with two goldust and two dalmatians....I hope I get some crazy calicos.
