What other fish are in the tank? Is the tank cycled? What are the parameters? Did he have anything visibly wrong like marks sores etc?

But did you cycle it by providing an ammonia source to build up beneficial bacteria?

A tank has to be cycled to be an appropriate environment for fish. Google the nitrogen cycle and I will grab you the links to some articles you'll need to read.

Make sure you read these

http://www.aquariumadvice.com/i-just...now/Page2.html

http://www.aquariumadvice.com/guide-...ium/Page1.html

http://www.aquariumadvice.com/import...by-/Page1.html

A lot of the time the people at the pet store don't really know how to properly start a tank, they just know what their training tells them. Which is to dump a bunch of chemicals in there. This isn't always the case but most of the time.

If you have a test kit, Can you go ahead and test your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates and tell me what they are? If you don't have one, get one.

This doesn't actually tell us anything.

In order to be of any help whatsoever we need actual numbers in ppm for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate.

How did you test? Strips or liquid?

If its the strips you will need a liquid test kit as the strips are notoriously inaccurate.
