How large is the tank and what's your stock? They should be good for several hours but we need to know your tanks info.

75 gallon 2 peguin 350 filters, with 2 aqueon 200 heaters...as of right now i have 10 african cichlids and pleco...looking to get more...it was more of an fyi kind of question.

i just read that you should take out your filter cartridges and float them in the tank to keep the bacteria alive...is that true?

If the power goes out more than 24 hours that is a good idea. The fish can last a long time, you will have to agitate the water to keep O2 levels up, either by scooping and dumping the water into the tank or with a battery powered air pump. My fish have gone 3 days without power.

If there's no water in the filter, just put it in a plastic sandwich bag with tank water. As long as the filter pad stays wet with tank water ... the bacterial will be fine.
