Obviously in live sand for a reef there are those biological differences, but I'm taking just sand I'm buying from a petstore in a bag. I want to put some sand atop in one of my freshwater set ups (for my dwarf puffers so they don't scratch themselves up) and was curious if there's anything in sand sold for reefs that would cause issues.

Most "reef sand" is aragonite based, which will buffer the pH of your water and is why it's recommended in a SW tank. I would find some regular play sand or aquarium sand for your dwarf puffers in your FW tank.

HTH :)
