Sand as filter media

I was just thinking about filter media for HOB filters and was wondering if large grain sand could be used in a fine mesh bag. I didn't know if it wold escape the filter though, but I was thinking it would work well for a replacement of carbon. I like the fine filtration of carbon in my ACs but don't typically run it. So I was thinking a bag of sand that the water could sift though might work well, just as long as the sand stayed in place and didn't squeeze through the bag.

If you want fine filtration, use polyester batting.

Thanks Bill. That's what I will try. I assume it would be best in the middle layer and inside a mesh bag?
