I need all the advice I can get with a planted tank! Mainly what to use for soil or substrate?

Many people reccomended Eco Complete, but you can use FloraMax as well. FloraMax was cheaper per bag for me and I couldn't find eco complete so i went with flora in my planted 29 gal.

Three bags of flora is what i used. I think it is 60 pounds.

I used two bags of EcoComplete in a 20g long (same footprint as the 29g). At the time it was on a killer sale at a local PetCo for $9 a bag (20 lbs). I even asked the employee if there was something wrong with it and she said corporate was pushing the product. I felt like I was robbing the store. That was a couple of years ago :(

I have a low to medium light tank and do well with just sand!

I went the cheap route and used Black Diamond Blasting sand for my planted tank.

That should be fine.
Is it completely black? One thing about EC is that the black is actually a mixture of primarily black with gray, tan, brown, and brick red mixed in.
