Tetra tabk mates

Quick question - will neon or cardinal tetras get along with red eye tetras in kept in schools of 6 or more?

Yes. Most tetras will get along with each other. Depends how big of a tank though.

+1 on tank size. And keep them in schools. They will be too pre-occupied in maintaining a pecking order than to bother other species. I have 10 silvertips and 10 serpaes in a 30g. And the 2 are just ignoring each other.

Thanks for the advice. I intend to buy a bigger tank to rehouse them all in. So looking at a 50g. Hopefully that should be big enough for them to get along.

That would be a great tank! You could really have healthy numbers in the schools depending on what other fish you're getting.

If you do go with a 50gal, you could also add some Rummynose tetras in addition to the Redeye and both Neons and Cardinals. The Neons and Cardinals
will more than likely shoal together, but their combined red / blue and white (neons) would look striking as a contrast to red-eye and rummies.

IMO ... the real difference maker will be plants and a Black background to make the colors pop. A dark substrate would just add even more.
