I got my 30 gallon set up, I definitely need more plants and getting a heater I'm all set. I WILL be doing a fishless cycle for this tank. Until I can get some ammonia, what would be a good way to start the cycle? I have a thing of fish food I bought that has flakes, granules and baby shrimp. I've tried the baby shrimp as well as granules with my platys but they don't eat either, they only prefer the flakes. Could I use the baby shrimp and granules and it work the same as using fish food as an ammonia source?

You could but ammonia levels can't be properly controlled. It also introduces other stuff into the water and makes a mess.

If the baby shrimp isn't a good idea, would the granules be better? Or should I just wait until I can get ammonia?

I would wait for the ammonia. It's Monday tomorrow, stores will be open and it only costs a buck or so.
