I run GFO all the time and phosphates are 0. I will occasionally toss a bag of carbon in the sump.

One can't be better than the other...they do totally different things. Carbon removes impurities and polishes water where GFO removes phosphates. Depending on what you are trying to address would identify what you would want to use on your system. This being said, ChemiPure Elite is carbon with GFO in it.
