Dark spots on hammer

Have a hammer with 2 stalks, the stalk-Skelton is getting darker and has a pretty big maroon spot on the y section. I can't get a pic. Is this a sign of growth or should I be concerned?
150g pond koi and comets
125 in wall reef , 55 sump
