My rock is beginning to look rusty, is that algae I guess?
It is not live rock. I restarted the tank one month ago
20 gallon with flourescent hood just for jawfish only. What
do I need to do about this brown stuff?

More then likely it's diatoms( it's part of the cycle that your tank will go through) and you can blow it off the rock with a turkey baster or just let it be and it should go away in time.

You are right, I googled it and there it was. My first experience with diatoms. I used live
Carribsea sand from LFS for jawfish tank and I guess that is what fueled the fire. Live sand and rusty rock. Lovely.
I am waiting for a skimmer to be built, maybe that will help some and I'll blow it off with baster. Thanx for the
Good info! Is it ok to add some inverts yet. I already have two jawfish and they seem fine, eating and digging
And hiding. Fascinating creatures.
