Betta Fins getting worse!

So my betta recently got his tail ripped and not sure how it occurred but it seemed to be getting better. Just over the course of today it's gotten way worse.

I don't know what to do. He seems fine but it seems like when I go out for a day and don't pay much attention to the tank this happens. I do have 6 neon tetras on the aquarium with him. I can't see it being fin rot because his fins were fin this morning. Help?

The second photo hides the colour of his scales. They aren't actually that dark it's just horrible lighting!

If I had to guess I'd say the neons. Either he is tail biting or they are doing it for him.

What are reasons for tail biting?
