Hi all,

So I recently lost my school of 5 bosemani rainbowsfih and it has me perplexed.

Why? Because I can’t figure out why it only affected the bosemani and not the other types I have.

It all started when the largest bosemani died, and then in the ensuing three days - every other bosemani died.

All exhibited similar signs just before dying. Disinterest in food, colours all faded, and hanging towards the top of the tank.

I checked all the paramaters and couldn’t find an issue. And like I said, no other fish in my tank was affected - other rainbowfish, mollies, torpedo barbs, tetras etc.

I am trying to figure out why all the bosemani would die - yet not affect any other fish.

It is as if they all died in solidarity…

Can anyone shed light on this.

Very weird.

Answer these questions as best you can so we might be able to better help you.
You can cut and paste it.

1~What type of fish is afflicted? In addition, please describe what is wrong with the fish to the best of your ability (i.e. cotton like growth, bloated, etc.).

[already mentioned these above in previous posts]

2~What are your tank parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temp, pH)? Please give exact values.

3~ How large is the tank? How long has the tank been set up?

4~What type of filtration are you using? Please give the name and number (i.e. Fluval 304) and amount of gph if known.

5~How many fish are in the tank? What kinds of fish are they and what are their current sizes?
rainbowfish,
mollies,
torpedo barbs,
tetras

6~When is the last time you did a water change and vacuum the gravel? How often do you do this? How much water do you remove at a time?

7~How long have you had the fish? If the fish is new, how did you acclimate it/them?

8~Have you added anything new to the tank--decor, new dechlorinator, new substrate, etc.?

9~What kind of food have you been feeding your fish, have you changed their diet recently?

A very vague recollection of posts from years back where the oldest / largest fish went first because they couldn’t adapt. Damage was done but the younger ones could ‘hang on’ for longer. I can’t recall the threads on whatever it was thought to be unfortunately. I’d be interested if anything pops up for a cause as nothing in handbook.

Hi Cutty, I’m so sorry about what happened with your bosemani :( In my experience when a fish is in the top of the aquarium there’s an issue with lack of oxygenation;

Do you have a filter as powerful enough for your tank? And if so, I recommend checking your water parameters with a good test kit.

As soon as you do that, post it and let us know! We will make sure nothing bad ever happens again to your fish...

I think its important to observe fish, look for early indications of things being wrong. Nobody knows your fish like you do. Early warnings and getting the correct treatments to your fish as soon as possible will give you the best chances of success.

Nobody can promise that nothing bad will happen to your fish. All anyone can do is their best and give your fish the best chances of not getting sick and recovering if they do. Even with the best advice and the correct treatment, sometimes the issue cant be properly diagnosed and the treatments arent effective.
