My friend has a freshwater tank with 3 fancy goldfish in. Last week the oranda had a kind of bruising around it's eye, and the eye buldging. The eye developed a White film over it which came off this morning together with the whole eye! Is this likely to be the result of an injury or something more sinister? The other 2 fish are currently fine. The affected fish looks fine apart from the eye, no clamped fins, ok it's not as active as normal but it's not just floating. Any advice please? I dosed the tank today with tetra general tonic as a precaution.

Could have been an injury to begin with, but was obviously infected. Research goldfish eye problems, see if anything is relevant to your fish, and treat accordingly.

What size tank is it? Is it cycled? What are your water parameters (ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/ph)? Water quality is usually the biggest issue when comes to problems with goldfish eyes. Injury would be the second cause. Even if it was just an injury (and not an issue with water quality), infection & fluid loss an going to be major problems here. Do you have a suitable qt tank? If not, the whole tank will have to be treated with theraputic aquarium salt (to aid in lessening fluid loss) in addition to an antibiotic (kanamycin or minocycline) to treat infection plus LOTS of healthy water and a good measure of hope that he is able to recover. The eye will not grow back but if it heals well, he will be able to manage with one good eye.

Thanks guys. Tank was cycled, but not sure about params. Hopefully this general tonic might help stop infection. Says it treats a wide range of things. Will give it 5 days and go over to do a water change, and see how things are. I think it was an injury that maybe got infected. Such a shame it's lost its eye. But nature usually amazingly adjusts.

You really need to find out the parameters & what size tank it is. This will be very helpful! The 'tonic' will do nothing for him & if this goes without proper treatment, he will not recover & will suffer beyond what has already happened. Please consider proper treatment for him!

Melfix/pimafix is not going to do anything in this situation. The fish needs to be treated with antibiotics in order to be able to recover.
