Larry, are these raised, and do they actually come off? It might almost be worth it to hold the fish in the net, even do this while the fish is underwater, and remove one of these things if they come off relatively easily, and then look at it under a microscope or even with a magnifying glass.

I just want to be sure these are not "spots" or otherwise normal coloration of the fish, like you see in OB peacocks, or in some hybrids.
 
Too hard to really tell/see enough detail with those pics, I agree with TankGirl though, its what I'd do.

FYI, some student (childrens) microscopes work very well and are inexspensive, you can buy'em at places like Toy's-R-Us and other large toy stores that sell stuff like chemistry sets and the like.
