We have a 6 gallon eclipse tank with a platy, a tetra and 8 young mollies. For the second time, the platy has a split dorsal fin. The first time, I used the Melafix and it worked great. At the time, we were cycling and I added it with the daily water changes. Now I am doing weekly water changes. Can I add the Melafix directly from the bottle into the tank or should I just do an extra water change so that it is mixed up with a few gallons of water first?

When is the last time you did a water change? A mid-week water change, especially if the platy has a torn fin, is never a bad idea. You could add the Melafix to the new water and then pour the new water in. Or you could get a bit of tank water in a jar and add the Melafix to that water - agitate a bit, and pour in the tank.
