Hi, im new to the forum and I am looking for some help if possible.

I have a single goldfish in a 40 litre tank, I rescued him after he became a neglected childs pet.

Ive had him a few months now and he has always been fine. Except when he came to me he didnt have pupils in his eyes if that makes sense. He has a normal looking eye but if you look very closely you see just a hole where the pupil should be.

Anyway, i feed him a pinch once day and clean a quarter of the water once per week, ive bought a filter. Yesterday i noticed what looked like a film over his eyes, kind of like cotton. It was very thin but just noticeable. Today i checked on him and its now turn into thick cotton type stuff with a white ring around one of his eyes.

I have taken a couple of photos, well the best i can because he's still very active, but could anyone direct me on what they think it could be and also what treatment he might need?

The poor fish has been neglected all his life and I just want to do best by him. Ive considered taking it to a vets however there isnt one local that specialises in fish.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, welcome to the forum. Bit late here.

Congrats on the fish rescue. Pics haven't posted, may take a little while. Did they post ok your end?

Can I ask what is the size and type of the goldfish? A 40 litre tank is unfortunately small so water changes and good filtration will be important. Increase to 50% each week, I'd suggest.

Also do you have any water chemistry readings for ph, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and temperature? Sometimes a lfs will do several for free (a liquid based test is more accurate than cardboard strips). Sing out if more details are needed.

Does the infection match anything in the link below? Had there been any injuries to the eyes recently?

First up is checking the water quality and making sure there is nothing stressing him. The infection itself sounds either fungal or bacterial.
